Default Payment Method

The default payment method in a digital wallet is the primary payment method that is automatically selected for transactions. Setting a default card streamlines the checkout process, making payments faster and more convenient, especially for frequent purchases.

How the Default Card Works

  • When you have multiple payment methods stored, the default card is pre-selected for all new transactions.
  • You can always override the selection and choose a different card at checkout if needed.
  • If the default card becomes invalid (e.g., expired or deleted), the wallet may prompt you to select a new default card.
  • Only one payment method can be designated as the default at any given time.

Benefits

  • Faster Checkout: No need to select a card for every purchase.
  • Reduced Errors: Minimizes the risk of accidentally using the wrong card.
  • Personalization: Lets you prioritize rewards, business, or personal cards as needed.
  • Consistency: Ensures a predictable payment experience across multiple transactions.
  • Simplified Recurring Payments: Makes subscription and recurring payment setup more straightforward.

Best Practices

  • Regularly review and update your default card to ensure it reflects your preferred payment method.
  • If you add a new card, consider whether it should become your new default.
  • Remove expired or unused cards to keep your wallet organized.

Example Scenario

  1. You have three cards saved: a personal credit card, a business card, and a debit card.
  2. You set your personal credit card as the default.
  3. When you make a purchase, the wallet automatically selects your personal credit card.
  4. For a business expense, you can manually select the business card for that transaction.

How to Set or Change the Default Payment Method

  • Go to your wallet's payment methods section.
  • Select the payment method you want as default.
  • Click "Set as Default" (wording may vary by platform).
tip

Setting a default does not prevent you from using other payment methods. It simply makes your preferred payment method the automatic choice for convenience. It's important to keep your default payment method up to date to avoid failed transactions or accidental charges on an unintended card. Review your wallet settings periodically, especially after adding, removing, or updating cards.

Manufacturer card cannot be designated as default

Manufacturer cards cannot be set as the default payment method due to mutual exclusivity between the "default" and "manufacturerCard" flags, stemming from functional and business logic constraints.

Functional Constraints

Restricted Use Case: Manufacturer cards are typically limited in scope and can only be used for specific purchases with the associated retailer or group of stores. Assigning them as the default payment method could lead to complications if the user attempts to make purchases that fall outside the manufacturer's network.

Business Logic

Limited Applicability: Manufacturer cards are typically designed for promotional benefits or discounts specific to certain purchases. Making them the default card could erroneously prioritize them for non-qualifying transactions, leading to failed payments or user confusion.

Ensuring Payment Versatility: A default card is intended to cover the widest range of payment scenarios. Manufacturer cards, being retailer-specific, do not possess this flexibility and are unsuitable for general default usage.

User Experience

Preventing Errors: Allowing manufacturer cards to be set as default could result in payment failures due to their usage restrictions (e.g., limited to affiliated stores). Suppressing the manufacturer card checkbox when the default flag is selected ensures smooth payment handling.

Simplified Workflow: By mutually excluding these flags, the system ensures that users are not overwhelmed with potentially confusing choices regarding card types and their functionality.
